Two cottages destroyed, no injuries after Friday night fire on Shadow River

A two-cottage fire in Rosseau over the long weekend ended with no injuries and a show of community.

Seguin Township says firefighters were able to safely put out the blaze about four hours after their arrival at the Knowles Crescent cottages. Officials say a total of 20 Seguin Township firefighters fought the blaze, with help from three Muskoka Lakes fire stations. Seguin Township Fire Chief Sean Carroll thanked all those that helped over the long weekend.

“On behalf of our crews, I’d like to thank our colleagues and volunteers from Muskoka Lakes who came out to help on a long weekend; with the windy, dry conditions, this fire had the potential to be even more devastating. With all hands on deck, we were able to avoid larger-scale catastrophe,” he said.

The township also extended its gratitude to the owners of the Rosseau General Store, Laurie McDonald and Brian Dollin for preparing food and drinks for the firefighters late into the night.

The township says pumpers, tankers, and a fireboat were used to fight the fire, located on the Shadow River. According to officials, although the two buildings were destroyed, the watercraft was essential in preventing the flames from spreading to a third dwelling.

The township says the cause of the fire is still listed as undetermined in part because of the excessive damage.
