Blue-Green Algae bloom spotted in Strong Township

Another lake is experiencing a blue-green algae bloom

The North Bay-Parry Sound District Health Unit says the bloom is in Bernard Lake in Strong Township.

Blue-green algae is technically an algae, but a bacteria. Sometimes blue-green algae is referred to as pond scum.

Algae blooms occur naturally, but toxins produced by blue-green algae can be dangerous to people.

The health unit is asking people to take a number of steps to keep themselves safe.

Anyone with a private water system shouldn’t use the water from the lake for drinking, cooking or bathing. The health unit is also asking people to stay out of the water while the bloom is in effect.

The health unit can’t confirm when water will be safe for use in private water system. Toxins can stay in the water for several weeks after the bloom has cleared.
