ACTION AGAINST VIOLENCE IN THE HEALTHCARE WORKPLACE

A new study released last Thursday in Windsor reveals new numbers regarding violence against front-line healthcare workers.

Called “Assaulted and Unheard, Violence Against Healthcare Staff”, the paper reports that violent incidents happen almost every day in Ontario Hospitals.

Interviews with over 54 healthcare professionals across province found that violence occurs almost daily in Ontario hospitals.

In a provincial poll of 2000 hospital staff by the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions released last month, 68 percent of frontline healthcare staff was found to have experienced work-related physical violence at least once in Ontario.

West Parry Sound Health Centre and Lakeland Long-Term Care CEO Donald Sanderson says the hospital is currently taking action to prevent such incidents.

The study was written by Canadian researchers Dr. Jim Brophy and Dr. Margaret Keith, and Michael Hurley, president of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions.
