ENFORCEMENT CHANGES RECOMMENDED FOR PARRY SOUND’S COMPLIMENTARY PARKING PROGRAM

The town of Parry Sound will be taking a different approach to enforcing Complimentary Parking in 2018.

A committee comprised of Director of Emergency & Protective Services and Fire Chief Dave Thompson, Municipal By-law Enforcement Officer Nathan Jeffery and the Parry Sound Downtown Business Association’s Susan Hyrcyna and David Coles reviewed the enforcement of the town’s Complimentary parking program.

They found the current policy of blanket enforcement was a strain on enforcement officers and staff.

The committee recommended that enforcement instead be based on complaints and flagrant abuse.

DBA Executive Director Susan Hyrcyna says employees working in the downtown area are some of the biggest abusers of the Complimentary Parking program.

Hyrcyna also says the new approach will encourage tourists to spend more time shopping in the downtown core.

That leaves the problem of where employees can park if space is limited.

Hyrcyna says permits and reserved spaces are available through the municipality.

The parking committee also recommends that permit parking spaces in the Miller St. lot be moved closer to James St., and better signage identifying permit parking throughout the downtown area.
