CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR SAVES LIVES ON ISABELLA ST. IN PARRY SOUND

A carbon monoxide detector is getting the credit for saving lives in Parry Sound.

Fire crews were called to a building on 118 Isabella St. on Wednesday, December 27th at 6 pm because of a CO detector going off in one of the apartments.

When firefighters arrived, they found that a natural gas furnace in a utility room was the source of the toxic gas.

Parry Sound Fire Prevention Officer John Tuck says the presence of that alarm saved lives.

Carbon monoxide alarms typically are set off when there are at least 20 parts of CO gas per million parts of air. You can get headaches and feel dizzy after being exposed to 35 parts per million over six to eight hours. Crews found a level of 209 parts per million in the utility room.

Tuck says the law is very specific when it comes to CO detectors.

It took two teams 20 minutes to evacuate the building.

No one was injured.
