OPP AND CANADIAN COAST GUARD SAY NO ICE IS SAFE ICE

The Canadian Coast Guard together with local OPP cautions no ice is safe ice.

With ice-breaking operations under way in Georgian Bay, the ice may not be as safe as it looks.

Canadian Coast Guard spokesperson Carol Launderville says ships can leave unsafe ice conditions in their tracks.

In addition to CCGS Samuel Risley performing ice-breaking duties in Georgian Bay, the Parry Sound coast guard base also has an eye in the sky to monitor the region’s ice conditions.

The OPP says having the proper equipment while snowmobiling such as a floater suit, ice picks, and a fully charged cell phone have already proven to be life savers in late 2017 and early 2018.
