The Archipelago residents are being asked by the township to forward your opinion about cannabis retail stores for the area.
Recreational cannabis was legalized on October 17th by the federal government. Right now the only way to legally purchase recreational cannabis in Ontario is through the Ontario Cannabis Store which is online-only. Beginning in April of next year, private brick-and-mortar cannabis stores will be opening up.
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario will be the provincial regulator that will licence the stores. The Ontario Cannabis Store will be the exclusive wholesaler to these retailers.
The province is giving municipalities a one-time opportunity to opt-out of having cannabis stores within their boundaries by January 22nd. Council has asked that staff gather public opinion about the possibility of allowing cannabis stores to operate in The Archipelago.
