It’s a protest against the federal government’s unilateral elimination of sick leave benefits for correctional officers. Over 100 members of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers will be protesting at Port Sydney Beach, not too far from where our MP Tony Clement lives. This includes members from Beaver Creek and Fenbrook Institutions in Gravenhurst. National Vice President Jason Godin says it’s a major violation of their collective agreement. The “Beach Party” demonstration is scheduled to start at 1:00pm, although union members and their families have been pouring in by the bus load since 11:00am.
