Family Literacy Day aims to promote a healthy mind and body

Family Literacy Day is coming up at the Parry Sound Public Library and the theme of the day is “Healthy Life.”

“Family Literacy Day aims to raise awareness for the importance of reading and engaging in literacy-related activities as a family.  Children begin developing language skills from the moment they’re born and the main source for those early learning experiences are their parents. Research has found that hearing a variety of words consistently helps prepare young children for reading later in life and builds their vocabulary leading to greater academic outcomes,” said Cayla Norrie, Programming Coordinator at the Parry Sound Public Library

Norrie says the theme will explore exercising the body and mind through healthy food choices, regular exercise and getting in at least 20 minutes of reading in per day.

Each child can expect to get a passport at the event where stations will be set up for kids to get a stamp after completing a healthy challenge. There are prizes for those children who fill up those passports.

All are welcome to this event which is this Saturday from 10:30am until noon.
