Friendship Centre offers support for men

During a time of women’s movements,  men are not forgotten.

A group of men gather weekly in Parry Sound at the Friendship Centre’s Men’s Circle where men of all backgrounds are offered a place of safety to express themselves and lean on other men for support.

The program was originally called “I’m a kind man” though according to Delores McKay, Executive Director of the Friendship Centre, the program was cut by the  Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres.

“These guys are sitting and speaking from their heart which is why, in whatever possible way, we wanted to continue this program even though we had to tweak a few things to make this happen. I’m just grateful that the programs we do have support the men’s group. We like to make sure that the men that come here are fed, safe and that their feelings are respected,” said McKay.

McKay added that some men that attend the men’s group have been affected by cancer and McKay is considering expanding the men’s circle to include a support group.

All men of every background are welcome to the friendship centre. A grief specialist is available at the men’s circle which happens on Thursday’s from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at 70 Isabella Street.
