CUPE strike may force local schools to close

PARRY SOUND, ON – Parents are being told to start making alternative measures as schools could be closed next week.

The Near North District School Board said in a Facebook post that closures could happen as early as Monday, October 7.

“Families are strongly encouraged to begin making alternate childcare arrangements prior to this potential strike,” the post said.  “We will communicate directly to parents and guardians once a decision is made about potential school closures.”

The potential closure is due to the full strike by CUPE members who work as custodians, clerical workers and teacher assistants.

The group is protesting cuts made by the provincial government.

Facilities will stay remain open on Thursday and Friday.

The MyParrySoundNow.com newsroom has reached out to the board for more information.
