Northern Ontario shutdown extended to January 25th, In-class school still starting Monday

The shutdown in Northern Ontario will be extended to January 25th, lining it up with the rest of the province.

However, students in the northern region will still be returning to in-person classes on Monday.

Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health made the announcement Thursday as COVID-19 cases continue to rise at an alarming rate throughout the province.

Dr. David Williams extended the lockdown for seven northern regions that were scheduled to re-open Saturday.

He pointed to Ontario’s record number of both cases and deaths today, saying this could mean the province seeing up to 4,000 cases of COVID-19 a day.

Dr. Williams said Northern Ontario currently has nine COVID-19 patients requiring acute care, four patients in intensive care, with two on a ventilator.

He says the total number of patients in Algoma Public Health and Public Health Sudbury & Districts are at over 90 percent.
