The local health unit reported the district’s first case of a COVID-19 variant Thursday.
The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit confirmed a person tested positive after recent international travel and further testing for variants was requested.
The individual is currently self-isolating after preliminary results of the testing showed the presence of a variant of concern.
The health unit says more testing is needed to identify the strain of this variant.
The province is currently facing a surge of the more easily transmissible variant of COVID-19 with related outbreaks in long-term care homes in districts as close as the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit.
