OPP says red tags no cause for concern

If you noticed a red OPP tag on your property, it’s not a cause for concern.

That’s according to Constable Joe Scali, West Parry Sound OPP Media Officer, who says the red tags belong to a joint program the OPP took part in during the 1990s.

Scali says the Cottage Watch program was sponsored by insurance and financial service LMS ProLink Limited, the Federation of Ontario Cottages Association, and ASCENTUS Insurance.

“They sponsored this cottage watch program with the Ontario Provincial Police. Supplied these tags, the West Parry Sound detachment just never ran out of them. So we continue to use them while we’re on patrol and it was just an indication for our officers and for cottage owners that their place had been visited [by officers],” he says.

However, Scali says the Federation of Ontario Cottage Association has recently contacted the detachment to see if they want to bring the program back to life with updated information.

He says in meantime, the red tags are no cause for concern, and have no scam or fraud implications at all.
