13 train cars derailed Wednesday near Mactier after two trains “made contact”

No injuries were reported after over a dozen train cars derailed on Wednesday near Mactier.

In a statement released to media, Candian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), the rail company that owns one of the trains, says the incident saw multiple cars derail around 4:30 Wednesday morning about 30 kilometres south of Parry Sound.

The statement says there were no injuries, no dangerous goods involved and no threat to public safety.

Officials with the rail company confirmed two of the 13 cars involved were carrying plastic pellets and the rest of the cars were empty.

According to CPKC, their crews immediately responded to the scene on Wednesday to begin a clean-up with the rail line reopening early Thursday after track repairs and safety inspections.

Officials say the cause of the derailment is under investigation, however the preliminary investigation has determined that a train operating in a restricted speed area “made contact with the rear of another train”.
