Parry Sound ready to celebrate the game of hockey

Organizers are gearing up for the first ever Hockey Day in Parry Sound on March 30.

The day, co-hosted by the Rotary Club of Parry Sound and Parry Sound Downtown Business Association, is jam-packed full of family-friendly events.

“We are celebrating 100 years of Shamrock Minor Hockey in Parry Sound. In conjunction with that we are also raising funds for the (West Parry Sound Aquatic and Recreation Centre), as well as other local rotary initiatives,” said Rick Cain, president of the Rotary Club of Parry Sound.

“We will look at what we were able to generate and hopefully we can support everybody and anybody.”

The day will kick off with a European breakfast at the Bobby Orr Community Centre, featuring pancakes, omelets, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit and a selection of sweet and Ukrainian crepes.

The Shamrock Shakedown will see local league teams go head-to-head from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

James Street, from Seguin Street to Mary Street, will be closed for a street party from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be sidewalk sales, hockey and sport themed inflatable games, a shootout hockey net, treats, music and more. Events will also take place at the Parry Sound Public Library and Stockey Centre.

A Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni game will cap off the day’s festivities. Wendel Clark, Rick Vaive, Gary Leeman and Todd Gill highlight a Leafs roster that will be facing off against a Shamrocks squad.

“That (announcement) really got the buzz going. Vaive is an 80’s player, Clark a 90’s player. It all depends on your age as to how many of these guys you remember and how many you don’t remember,” said Cain.

As of Feb. 15, only platinum and VIP tickets remained.
