Parry Sound High School’s annual youth-led Pow Wow is scheduled for June 7 at the Bobby Orr Community Centre.
According to student coordinator Kate Naganosh of Magnetawan First Nation, the event is about bringing the community together.
“The theme, Zaagtoodaa, Let’s Love, is about coming together and the love you feel when you are with your friends,” said Naganosh.
Indigenous studies teacher Johna Hupfield says Naganosh and other students from the three classes she teaches are involved with organizing and hosting the event.
“It is a learning Pow Wow. Students in the classes I teach have an opportunity to learn how to organize a Pow Wow, to learn about protocol, etiquette, how to give invitations to the community, how to welcome in their head dancers, their drum group. These are life skills they can use forever,” said Hupfield.
Along with the traditional singing, dancing and drumming, the Pow Wow will feature information booths from Kilbear Park, the Georgian Bay Biosphere and Shawanaga and Wausauksing First Nations.
The Pow Wow is one of several large events that was relocated from the high school to another venue due to the ongoing construction of the JK to Grade 12 super school next door.
Grand Entry will take place at 10:30 a.m.
