Wildland fire next to Highway 69 quickly extinguished

A small wildland fire next to Highway 69 was quickly extinguished by firefighters on June 19.

Officials say the fire, about a third of an acre in size, occurred about a half a kilometer southwest of Grundy Lake Provincial Park.

Ministry of Natural Resources Fire Information Officer Evan Lizotte says the current hot conditions are conducive to wildfires.

“High heat and high winds definitely bring more of a hazard, so we just ask that individuals are very cautious when it comes to burning when it is hot and windy out,” he said.

According to Lizotte the start of this fire season hasn’t come close to last year’s numbers.

A total of 108 fires have burned 6,371 hectares this year.

By this time last year, 280 fires had burned 110, 674 hectares.
