The West Parry Sound Recreation and Cultural Centre board is facing the task of trying to satisfy donor and public expectations, while managing a project that’s already over budget.
At a meeting on July 10, Seguin Mayor Anne MacDiarmid reiterated the public interest in an expansion to the pool’s viewing area.
“The municipal services board and the public have been crying for gallery space to make the business plan for swim teams work,” she said.
A motion tabled by Coun. Terry Fellner, asked the project manager and design team to provide detailed pricing for four options which would expand the pool area viewing.
“It is really the last chance to prove to several donors that the work of the citizens advisory committee and the public has not been ignored,” said MacDiarmid.
However, project manager Andy Gordon informed the board that total project costs are now expected to surpass $39 million dollars, well over the $36.3 million dollar budget approved last year.
The nearly $3 million overage concerned several board members, including McDougall Mayor Dale Robinson.
“We know we are way over our budget at this point in time. Way over our budget. So, whether something is $100,000, $200,000 or $500,000, that’s just adding to the load of our municipal taxpayers, which is already substantial.”
The board has asked the design team to provide a detailed report outlining all costs associated with a potential expansion, before any decisions are made.
The next board meeting is scheduled for Aug. 14.
