An exhibit on the Waubuno, a steamship, which sunk in Georgian Bay in the summer of 1879, is now on display at the Museum on Tower Hill.
Museum historians say the vessel got caught in a storm during a routine voyage from Manitoulin Island to Collingwood and sunk to the bottom of the bay. It was last spotted about 60 kilometres south of Parry Sound.
“Though the Waubuno’s physical form now rests beneath the waves, its legacy endures as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the indomitable forces of nature. Over the years, divers and historians alike have sought to unravel the mysteries shrouding its final moments, piecing together fragments of the past to honour its memory,” states a teaser on the museum’s website.
The exhibit will be on display at the West Parry Sound District Museum until Nov 30.
