Georgian Bay Biosphere hosting turtle open house

The Georgian Bay Biosphere is hosting a Turtle Open House on Aug. 5.

According to Tianna Burke, Lands and Wildlife Program Manager, people are invited to come out and meet the hatchlings they’ve been raising, learn about native turtles, how to hold them and what you can do to help them.

“We will also have biologists on site who can talk more about our programs, turtles and reptiles, and answer anyone’s questions. It is just a really fun, family-friendly learning experience,” she said.

This year, the Biosphere partnered up with Moose Deer Point First Nation and Seguin Township as part of their turtle egg rescue program. According to Burke, the majority of the eggs the organization was able to save came from those two communities.

“With their help we have collected just over 1,300 eggs,” said Burke. “The ones that are ready for release later on (Aug. 5) will be just outside our facility (at the open house) for people to see.”

The drop-in event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the William Street office.
