Blue-green algae on Bear Lake

Our health unit is warning of a blue-green algae bloom on Bear Lake.

Officials say its the first time a harmful algae bloom has been found on the lake, located about 50 kilometres northeast of Parry Sound.

The North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit is recommending not to drink, swim in, cook with, or eat fish from the contaminated water.

Officials say the algae produce toxins harmful to humans and animals – symptoms include skin, eye, or throat irritation, fever, abdominal pain, and more.
