Concerned citizens urging council to preserve Waubuno Road bridge

Concerned citizens are speaking out in hopes of preserving a Parry Sound landmark – the Old Town Beach bridge.

A report from town staff says the bridge is in need of an estimated $350,000 worth of repairs. It presents council with three options: repair the bridge, replace it, or remove it all together.

Resident David Brunton will be making a presentation to council on Aug. 13 urging them to repair the bridge, and he’s looking for more public support.

“Just come on out and show your support by coming to council chambers. Lets show council our support so we can encourage them to make a decision that is right for the citizens of Parry Sound,” said Brunton.

Support to keep the bridge has been growing over the course of the past month. Brunton says he has more than 500 signed letters of support, and a Facebook page titled ‘Save the Old Town Beach Bridge’ has nearly 700 members.

Council will hear from a deputation of concerned citizens on Aug. 13 at 7 p.m.

The topic will be back in front of council for discussion on Sept. 3.
