Is the post office suitable for affordable housing?

The federal government is wondering if there might be a better use for the building at 74 James Street.

The 17,685-square-foot brick building, which currently houses Canada Post and Service Canada, is one of 70 federal properties listed in the Canada Public Land Bank.

In the 2024 Budget, the federal government announced a plan to build four million more homes. As part of this plan, the government has started identifying properties within its portfolio that have potential for housing.

“Safe, accessible and affordable housing options are out of reach for far too many Canadians. The launch of the Canada Public Land Bank in August 2024 laid the foundation for our efforts to unlock public lands for housing at a pace and scale not seen in generations,” stated Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Public Service and Procurement.

The list of potential properties is continuing to grow, with 14 more properties added in early October.

“We need to build more homes in Canada, and one of the largest costs in building is land. With 14 more properties being added to the land bank, we’re growing the list of potential public lands where new homes can be built,” stated Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities.

Wherever possible, officials say the properties will then be turned into housing through a long-term lease, not a one-time sale, to support affordable housing and ensure public land stays public.

The government is currently seeking feedback on 74 James Street, and its potential. More information can be found here.
