Town looking into using automated speed enforcement cameras

The Town of Parry Sound is considering the use of Automated Speed Enforcement cameras.

According to the Dave Thompson, the town’s Director of Development and Protective Services, staff have made numerous attempts to slow down traffic, and automated cameras are the next step.

“We’ve been attempting to slow down traffic over the last few years, significantly. We have installed bollards on the centre line with speed limits attached to them. We have installed oversize 40 km/hr speed limit signs… we have had radar feedback signs up. There have been multiple attempts,” he said.

“We have been attempting to have an impact. Unfortunately, we have had a very limited and short-lived impact on speeds overall. Driver behaviour is very difficult to change.”

At a meeting on Jan. 21, Thompson received council permission to work with a third-party provider, Local Authority Services, to develop the framework for a speed enforcement program.

The topic will come back to council for further discussion at a later date.
