Nearly two dozen water infrastructure projects across the province are getting provincial funding, including two in West Parry Sound.
The province says it’s investing $325 million in critical water infrastructure projects to help build up to 107,000 new homes across Ontario.
The Town of Parry Sound is receiving over $13 million to make upgrades to a sewage pumping station to allow for an additional 2,400 housing units in the harbour area. The project will allow further housing growth, create jobs and redevelop brownfield lands.
“West Parry Sound is growing and the need for housing is critical to meet those needs,” said local MPP Graydon Smith. “I’m pleased to see our government investing in the West Parry Sound region so that it can reach it’s full potential.
The Municipality of McDougall will use $1.5 million dollars to replace an aging septic system in the Crawford Subdivision, allowing for 16 new houses.
The money comes from the second intake of the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (HEWSF).
“Our government’s increased investment in HEWSF will enable rural Ontario to continue to build the necessary infrastructure for new housing developments,” says Lisa Thompson, Minister of Rural Affairs. “This investment can also grow confidence that rural Ontario can support all aspects associated with leveraging the growth of manufacturing and industrial opportunities in our small, rural, and Northern municipalities.”
The province says both the first and second intakes of the fund have resulted in $700 million being announced, to help build 160,000 new homes in 54 small, rural and Northern municipalities.
