Failure to extinguish camp fire leads to big fines for five men from the Niagara region

Five men from the Niagara region have been fined for not putting out a fire in the Parry Sound area.

Over the May long weekend, the men were camping on the Mowat Forest Access Road when they started a fire to burn trash and then left the campsite.  Concerned local residents saw the campsite on fire and reported it to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s 310-FIRE hotline.  The fire burned a total of 0.7 hectares and was suppressed and extinguished by the ministry’s forest fire fighters.

As a result, a Parry Sound court found the men guilty of failing to extinguish a fire and each was fined $250.  They were also ordered to pay close to $7,000 in restitution costs.
