MAYORS OPPOSE OPG’S DEEP DIG FOR NUCLEAR WASTE

Parry Sound Mayor Jamie McGarvey says no to nuclear waste dumping in the Great Lakes Basin.

In an open letter addressed to the federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change Catherine McKenna, 104 mayors strongly voiced their opposition to a plan proposed by Ontario Power Generation.

As one of the elected officials representing communities on both sides of the border, the mayor called on the minister to stop Deep Geologic Repositories proposed by the OPG.

The plan calls for burying nuclear waste to a depth of 680 metres in various sites along the Great Lakes including Lake Huron. Ontario Power Generation in its proposal says rock formations at that depth are natural barriers that isolate the waste from the surrounding environment.

The mayors’ letter sites 230 resolutions representing 23 million people opposed to building DGR’s anywhere in the Great Lakes Basin. They say the OPG proposal could affect the drinking water 40 million people and a Great Lakes regional economy worth over $6 trillion.
