ONTARIO’S MINIMUM WAGE GOING UP JANUARY 1ST

Ontario workers are getting a raise in the New Year thanks to a new minimum wage.

The general minimum wage will increase to $14 an hour as of January 1st, up from the current $11.60.

Highlighted yesterday by Minister of Labour Kevin Flynn in Toronto, the raise is part of a number OF changes the government’s Fair Workplaces Better Jobs Act will bring to improve conditions in the workplace.

While the increase doesn’t apply to student minimum wage and to those who serve liquor in the service industry, it does apply to an estimated 55 percent of all retail workers in the province.

Other changes coming in the New Year include ensuring at least three weeks’ vacation for anyone who’s been with the same employer for over five years.
