Joint ice-breaking agreement renewed between Canadian and U.S. Coast Guards

A renewed partnership between Canadian and U.S. Coast Guards continues to ensure reliable winter shipping.

Announced last Thursday, the updated Memorandum of Understanding signed January 18th  allows even more ice-breaking cooperation on the Great Lakes between the two countries.

Canadian Coast Guard spokesperson Carol Launderville says the updated memorandum, originally put in place in 1980, allows the better sharing of information and equipment.

Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers, including Parry Sound’s CCGS Samuel Risley, have already had a busy winter season this year keeping shipping channels clear.

In the last month, joint efforts between both coast guards have given more than 300 vessels safe passage between Lake Huron and Lake Erie.

The Risley is currently escorting a tanker in Lake Erie.
