While all the recent snow looks great for snowmobiling most trails are not yet open.
The Ontario Provincial Police are reminding snowmobilers that while the urge to hit some fresh snow may be huge, there is a danger as trails still need grooming.
There could be logs, rocks and other dangers hidden under the snow.
Trails are under the care of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs.
According to a release from the OPP obeying closed trail signs right now is important.
“Please remember riding on closed OFSC trails may cause damage to the property or cause landowners to revoke consent closing trails for everyone,” the release says. “Riders who choose to ride on closed OFSC trails may be charged.”
Another danger is open water. Despite cold temperatures, there is little or no ice formed. Some snowmobilers then attempt to ‘skip’ over open water. Police say that is a bad plan.
“Snowmobilers (who) choose to intentionally skip open water cause unnecessary risk to themselves and to first responders attempting a rescue or recovery,” remind the OPP. “Police wish to remind people, no ice is ever 100% safe and everyone should remain off the ice that has started to form on our waterways.”
