Nearby OPP detachment warning of “porch pirates”

The Huntsville OPP is cautioning residents to be aware of “porch pirates”.

“Porch pirates are thieves who steal packages that are left at someone’s house when they are not home to accept the parcel,” explains Constable Jeff Handsor.

He suggests tracking deliveries and, if you’re able, being at home when it’s expected the package will arrive. Otherwise, Handsor says to ask a friend or neighbour to be there when the delivery is dropped off. If all else fails, he says to ask your employer if packages can be delivered to your work.

When ordering online, Handsor says some stores allow for in-store pick-up.

If able, he says installing a motion-detection home security system is a good idea since it records and sends a video to your phone right away if any activity is noticed.
