Nineteen. That’s the number of times school buses haven’t run this winter across the Parry Sound District due to bad weather.
Check Seguin, executive director of the Nipissing-Parry Sound Student Transporation Services, says that’s more than each of the past two years, and one off the 5-year high of 20 recorded in 2018-19.
Seguin says there were four snow days in December, compared to one the previous year. January was higher as well, with nine days of bus cancellations compared to six the same month last year.
“This is the first year in many that we had to cancel due to extreme cold with frigid temperature and windchill values that met our guideline parameters,” said Seguin. “We’ll see what the future holds weather-wise.”
Near North District School Board officials say, despite weather conditions, students are encouraged to attend school using alternate transportation when possible, as schools remain open and instruction is taking place.
