Parry Sound councillors encouraging residents to buy Canadian

Several Parry Sound councillors took time during a meeting on March 4 to once again encourage residents to buy Canadian.

Councillor Paul Borneman broached the topic and urged residents to be cognizant of the 25% tariffs recently introduced by US President Donald Trump.

“We think of ourselves in a small town as not having much influence, but with President Trump’s tariffs today, I think Canadians in general need to be cognizant of what is going on,” he said. “I hope I start to see fewer Amazon trucks in town and that people start shopping local and buying Canadian.”

Councillor Chris McDonald and Mayor Jamie McGarvey echoed that sentiment.
“I think it is extremely important that we as Canadians pull together as a solid front…basically we are being attacked economically by a much larger country and they seem to want to change the world,” said McGarvey.

At a meeting on Feb. 18, council passed two motions endorsing federal and provincial calls to action to buy Canadian when possible. One motion called on the federal and provincial governments to remove any impediments to municipalities preferring to engage Canadian companies for capital projects and supplies when appropriate and feasible.

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario, says municipalities across the province are expected to spend around $290 billion on infrastructure in the next 10 years.
